License Nail Technician State Requirements
Licensing Regulations in Florida
To become a nail expert in Florida, you do not need to take an exam. Instead, you must finish 180 hours of study, pass a four-hour state-approved HIV/AIDS course, pay applicable fees, and apply for licensing with the Florida Board of Cosmetology. The initial application for licensing costs $75.
In addition, Students from other states with a valid cosmetology license (including nail technician requirements) may still qualify for licensing in Florida through endorsement. To do so, your state's education and standards must meet or surpass those in Florida, and your license in the other form must be active. To be eligible, candidates must:- Be at least 16 years of age or have received a high school diploma
- Possess a Social Security number
- Be currently licensed to practice cosmetology in another state
- Complete a four-hour board-approved Initial HIV/AIDS course
- Pay a $59 fee
Note:
- Military veterans, their wives, and members of the Florida National Guard may be eligible for a fee waiver, refund, or reduction.
License Renewal in Florida
The certificated nail technician must renew the license every 2 years. The renewal deadline is October 31st. You need 10 additional education hours when renewing your license. The extra cost is $45. Your hours must contain the following:
- Chemical Makeup: 1 hour
- Environmental Issues: 1 hour
- HIV/AIDS: 1 hour
- Laws and Rules: 2 hours
- OSHA: Half hour
- Sanitation and Sterilization: 3 hours
- Workers’ Compensation: Half hour
- Any Relevant Subject: 1 hour
If you do not renew your nail specialist license on time, it will become inactive until you do, and you will be unable to operate as a nail technician during that period. A claim becomes null and worthless after two consecutive missed licensure cycles.
Your license will not be reinstated if it is deemed null and void unless you meet the following conditions:- Complete a board-approved HIV/AIDS course
- Pay a $75 fee
- Explain the illness or economic hardship that delayed the renewal
